Pilot Movie Poster

[MOVIE REVIEW] Pilot (feat. Cho Jung Seok, Lee Joo Myoung, Han Sun Hwa, Shin Seung Ho)

I knew I was going to watch this movie the moment I saw the trailer. In case nobody else noticed, recent Korean movies have all been rather dark and depressing and I was so happy to see that there’s finally a comedy in the mix! Plus the cast is led by Cho Jung Seok who is a versatile actor and can act in pretty much any role, but who I especially enjoy watching in comedies.

Cho Jung Seok plays Han Jung Woo, a celebrity pilot whose sparkling world comes crashing down on him after he gets embroiled in a scandal due to a careless remark made during a company dinner. Fired from his airlines and unable to get another job with other airline companies due to his poor reputation, he ends up taking drastic measures. Re-inventing himself as a female pilot with the help of his make-up artist sister Han Jung Mi (played by Han Sun Hwa), Jung Woo borrows her name and identity to live his new life, but will he be able to get away with this huge lie?

[WARNING! SPOILERS AHEAD]

Can we just take a moment to appreciate how beautiful Cho Jung Seok looks all dressed up in this dress and with long hair? The actor is no stranger to dressing up as a lady, having played Hedwig in the musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch but it was still so adorable to see how Jung Woo was so pleased to be called “unni” by a stranger on the streets.

Anyway, back to the movie. It begins with Jung Woo enjoying life as a celebrity pilot, making appearances on all kinds of variety shows and having endorsements from different brands… until a scandal erupts due to a leaked audio of a company dinner where Jung Woo is heard complimenting the beauty of the airlines’ stewardesses, which was deemed offensive. He ends up losing his job, his confidence, and his marriage.

Unable to get a new job, Jung Woo goes back to his parents’ home, defeated. After yet another job rejection, he starts drinking and in his intoxicated state, sends a job application under his sister’s name… and ends up getting an interview! Which is where the madness really begins as Jung Woo now has to lead a double life.

I’m not familiar with the other two actors, Lee Joo Myoung and Shin Seung Ho, but I think everyone did a great job at portraying their characters. I’m personally pleasantly surprised by Han Sun Hwa’s acting! Maybe it’s because this role required a bit of over-the-top dramatic acting, but she did it so well and I kept laughing at her facial expressions throughout the movie.

Lee Joo Myoung plays Yoon Seul Gi, a fellow pilot who ends up being BFFs with “Han Jung Mi”, and we get to enjoy their friendly banter and chemistry throughout the movie which made me feel warm and fuzzy inside.

And finally, we have Shin Seung Ho, who plays Jung Woo’s co-pilot who is constantly trying to hit on Jung Woo when he’s pretending to be Jung Mi. For some reason, constantly getting rejected by “Jung Mi” excites him…

I’ll not go further into the plot because then it’ll kill the fun in watching the movie (although you’d probably still laugh a lot regardless), but basically be prepared for a lot of laughter and dramatic scenes! I wouldn’t even mind watching this again in the theatres because it was fun.

PS Stay for the end-credits to enjoy a surprisingly fun cameo!

A special thanks to Purple Plan for the media invite.

Watch Pilot when it’s out in theatres on 15th August!
