2024 Byeon Woo Seok Asia Fanmeeting Tour “Summer Letter” Press Conference in Singapore

(x)clusive!: Byeon Woo Seok ‘Summer Letter’ Press Conference in Singapore

In Singapore for his first solo fanmeet, ‘Summer Letter’, Byeon Woo Seok shared insights about his latest obsession while on tour, his acting career, and his love for watermelon, during the closed-door press conference with the media.

Looking absolutely stunning in an oversized black suit, Byeon Woo Seok started the press conference by personally presenting flowers to each member of the media — a charming departure from the usual photocall. The actor made sure to hold eye contact as he coyly handed out the mini bouquets and it would be a lie to say our hearts didn’t skip a beat, or maybe two. There was no doubt he captivated everyone with his charm and charisma from the moment he entered the room with his shy, heart-fluttering smile.

“I’m very happy and very excited to be in Singapore to meet all my fans. If I could run to anywhere in Singapore, of all places, I’m really looking forward to running to the fanmeet venue.”

This being Byeon Woo Seok’s first trip to Singapore, the actor mentioned that he came to our little isle with the goal of having lots of fun while making lots of good memories with his fans. Knowing very well that his fans have spent their time, money, and resources to see him, Byeon Woo Seok shared that he wanted to spend more time interacting and meeting them, not wasting even a precious second.

On the food he was looking forward to trying in Singapore, Byeon Woo Seok mentioned both chilli crab and chicken rice. He also shared that before his trip, while chatting with his friend who is currently living in Singapore, he was given a long list of about ten places to check out during his stay, which includes Italian pasta, pizza, hamburgers, in addition to the local dishes.

When asked about his recent obsession, he candidly confessed that since the start of his Asia tour, he has been really into the cultural differences of each place he visits, whether in the way people love, express their emotions, or go about their daily routines. As there are bound to be some differences, no matter how big or small, he is interested to learn them all.

Known for his positivity, Byeon Woo Seok believes that results are beyond his control. That is why he places emphasis on the process and directs his effort into whatever he does, since that is something he can actually control. This perspective has helped him to stay jovial and positive.

Having traveled a fair bit for his Asia tour, Byeon Woo Seok always travels prepared.

“There are two things I always bring: medication to subside my allergy and Theraflu because I take it whenever I feel like I’m going to get the flu so that I don’t fall sick.”

Reflecting on his journey towards being called a “rom-com genius,” the actor shared, “I was really nervous when I was posed with that question. I don’t think I am a rom-com genius, but I’ll be very grateful if anyone calls me that. To earn this title, I think the first thing is to do my best in my drama and acting.”

Discussing his aspirations and future pursuits, Byeon Woo Seok confessed that before “Lovely Runner,” he was into many different genres, including action and fantasy. But after taking on the role of Ryu Sunjae, it changed his perspective since that was the first time he got to be deeply and emotionally immersed in a character. As such, he doesn’t want to choose his next character or work based on a certain genre or character type and limit himself in that way. Although he mentions that he personally loves romantic comedies and there’s a higher chance he will end up choosing those kind of dramas!

On his acting technique when approaching emotional scenes, Byeon Woo Seok explained, “I pay very close attention to the character I’m interacting with and try to deeply understand what they’re feeling and going through. This helps me immerse myself in my own role.”

Aside from his breakthrough role as Ryu Sunjae, his character in the movie “20th Century Girl” left the deepest impression on him, as it was this project that helped him overcome his camera phobia and some personal trauma he was going through.

On moving past his typical tragic roles with “Lovely Runner,” the actor shared that in most of his past works, his characters had one-sided loves and were often unsuccessful. “Lovely Runner” had a happy ending, but even then, he felt overwhelmed with sadness and had a long chat with the scriptwriter about it after receiving the script for the final episode.

Sharing a behind-the-scenes funny episode with the media, Byeon Woo Seok mentioned that while he doesn’t recall anything being very difficult while filming, working with actress Kim Hye-yoon posed some comedic challenges due to their height difference. “We were shooting in an old house with low ceilings and a short door. Everyone joked about how I was as tall as the door,” he said. (A side note that Byeon Woo Seok is 1.9m tall.)

TongTongs are no strangers to his love for watermelons and were tickled when the star posted a humorous selfie with watermelons in Taipei on his Instagram account. To this, Byeon Woo Seok laughed and shared, “First of all, the size of the watermelon was nothing like I’ve seen before. It was so huge and I love watermelon. At the time, I just happened to be in a supermarket buying groceries and I saw this huge watermelon and I was so amazed and impressed.”

The success of “Lovely Runner” has allowed Byeon Woo Seok to travel around the world, whether for his Asia tour or his brand endorsements, to meet his fans. For that, the actor is immensely grateful for the opportunities given and the doors opened.

And lastly, a sweet message to TongTongs (an affectionate term for his fans):

“Just like how all the TongTongs are telling me I’m a gift to all of them, likewise, all the TongTongs are such a wonderful gift to me too. The journey I had till today hasn’t been easy. There were difficult times of course, but I can say very confidently that I did my best and I always had my TongTongs giving me unwavering support and love. And thanks to that, I think that’s what really kept me going until today. Thanks to that, it will keep me going for the next long journey ahead.”

Considering Woo Seok’s sweet and lovely nature in person, we can’t wait to see what he will bring to the table in the future!

Special thanks to Three Angle Production for the press conference invite.
