Here’s a film based on a novel which has been the subject of controversy for its content which has been criticized for simplifying and exaggerating the gender issue in South Korea. Kim Ji-young, Born 1982 tells a story which many of us would be able to empathise with. Be it our own story, our mother’s story or our grandmother’s story. The film is led by top actors Jung Yu-mi and Gong Yoo, and addresses deep-rooted social issues in the Korean society.
Synopsis of Kim Ji-young, Born 1982:
Kim Ji-young (played by Jung Yu-mi) is an ordinary Korean woman in her 30s, living a simple life as a full-time mom and housewife. Despite having to give up her full-time job as well as other freedoms after marriage, she believes she is content in life as she is married to the man she loves and has a beautiful baby girl. However, her husband Dae-hyeon (played by Gong Yoo) soon realises that Ji-young is struggling emotionally, sometimes behaving as though she’s her mother, her best friend who died while giving birth, and her late grandmother.
