A stage of dreams for K-pop fans all over the world will be unveiled in Gangwon-do, where the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics will be held.
Having successfully held the “K-POP Cover Dance Festival” in 2011 and 2012, the Visit Korea Committee has prepared a global festival in partnership with Gangwon-do to promote Pyeongchang Winter Olympics as well as Gangwon-do tourism with “2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics” as momentum.
Foreigners (excluding people with Korean nationality) can participate by posting their cover dance UCC (User Creating Content) covering their favorite K-POP stars on the official website (http://www.kpopfestival.org) beginning May 6. Qualifiers are decided through viewer responses (number of views, recommendations) and assessments of experts. Overseas finals will be held in 12 countries throughout Asia, the Americas, Europe, Africa and Oceania. Winners in each country will compete in the grand finale in Korea.
The grand finale will take place in Wonju-si of Gangwon-do on September 28 as the opening ceremony for the “Wonju Dynamic Festival.” As a 20,000-seat scale event, the grand finale will be held together with a concert featuring K-POP stars.
The committee will also invite special winners based on the result of online preliminaries for areas where no regional finals are held and let the team introduce beautiful Korean tourist attractions and culture. Furthermore, the committee is planning to develop a tourism package for foreigners wishing to watch the grand finale.
“We will select the countries where the finals will be held mainly from among new markets that are hard for the private sector to enter, even though K-POP is in demand in Australia, Turkey, Poland, Nigeria, etc. We will use this event as an opportunity to give prominence to Korea as an attractive, vibrant tourist destination and promote the true culture of Korea,” said Hong Ju-min, secretary-general of the Visit Korea Committee.
K-POP Festival in Gangwon 2013 will be co-hosted by the Visit Korea Committee, Gangwon-do and Wonju-si, supported by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Korean Culture and Information Service and Korea Tourism Organization, and sponsored by Astronergy Solar Korea, Korean Air, Asiana Airlines, Lotte Members, GKL, etc. The grand finale and the documentary of overseas finals with K-POP stars as judges will be broadcasted in more than 10 countries through SBS MTV and MTV Asia.
