ABOUT THE “BEST ASIA ACT” NOMINEES

The power is now with the Asian viewers as MTV unveils the nomination list for “Best Asia Act” in the kick-off phase of the competition leading to “Worldwide Act”.

YUNA, Southeast Asia

From Southeast Asia, Yuna stands tall for indie fans as the only singer-songwriter from an independent music background. From a strong following on MySpace, Yuna achieved massive success when she won multiple awards at Malaysia’s prestigious AIM Awards in 2009. Since then, Yuna has furthered her career in the US with a record deal under Fader Label and a nomination as one of MTV Iggy’s Best New Bands in the World. Yuna released her self-titled full-length US debut album in April 2012, featuring 13 original tracks produced by some of today’s best music talent amongst whom are award-winning musician Chris Braide (Sia, Lana Del Rey) and creative visionary Pharrell Williams.

HAN GENG, China

Known as “the most influential male celebrity in China”, Chinese singer and actor Han Geng is undoubtedly dominating the Mando-pop scene in Southeast Asia. In 2005, he debuted in South Korea as the only Chinese member of Super Junior and the leader of its Chinese squad SJ-M but eventually left to focus on a solo career. His 1st solo album sold over a million copies and tickets to his 1st concert sold out in a record-breaking 37mins. To date, he has received over 20 awards for his solo works. Han Geng is also well known for his powerful dance skills. Han Geng’s sophomore album Hope in the Darkness was released in July this year.

JOLIN TSAI, Taiwan

Next on the nomination is award-winning Taiwanese Mando-pop princess Jolin Tsai who is a force to reckon with. Since her debut in 1999, the industry darling has raked in countless awards across Asia. Her 7th album J-Game was the longest running album on the Taiwanese charts in 2005 and sold over 1 million copies across Asia in just over a month. In 2010, Jolin Tsai embarked on her third concert tour playing to sold-out arenas across Asia and will perform for the first time in London on 21 Oct 2012 at the Wembley Arena. Being a prominent artist, Jolin was appointed as the ambassador for Taiwan at the World Expo 2010 held in Shanghai, China. She had previously worked with international superstars Kylie Minogue, Usher and Rain. Her much anticipated 12th studio album MUSE was released in September.

EXILE, Japan

Hailing from Japan is EXILE, an award-winning dance and vocal unit with 14 members: Hiro, Matsu, USA, Makidai, Atsushi, Akira, Takahiro, Kenchi, Keiji, Tetsuya, Nesmith, Shokichi, Naoto and Naoki. The group, with a decade worth of successes, including 14 chart-topping albums under their belt, performed for over 1.1m audience during their concert tour in 2010. Their EXILE Live Tour 2011 held last December attracted an audience size of 600 thousands. Winning the Japan Record Award for 3 consecutive years, EXILE had represented the nation at the China-Japan-Korea Music Festival held at Beijing National Stadium last year.

SUPER JUNIOR, Korea

Rounding up the “Best Asia Act” nomination is South Korean boy-band Super Junior. The band has risen as the main leader of the Hallyu wave and gained immense popularity across the globe since its debut in 2005. Super Junior, widely considered as the best multi-talented entertainers in Korea, also has sub-unit performances and successful solo activities as the top actors, MCs, DJs, and models.

Apart from the “Worldwide Act”, music fans around the world may also vote for other 2012 MTV EMA categories – “Best Song,” “Best Live,” “Best Pop,” “Best Electronic,” “Best New,” “Best Female,” “Best Male,” “Best Hip Hop,” “Best Rock,” “Best Video,” “Best Push,” “Best Alternative,” “Best World Stage,” “Best Look” and “Biggest Fans” – from now till 9 November 2012.
