23rd October 2010 was indeed a day to be remembered by all K-pop lovers in Singapore as 7 K-pop groups – SHINee, Big Bang, Girls Generation, ZE:A, Infinite, F.T. Island and The Boss – took the same stage at Expo Hall 2 that night for the Korean Pop Night Concert 2010.
After almost 2 months of anticipation following the sales of tickets, it was really not surprising when almost everyone present were equipped with light sticks, fans, hand banners and placards of the artists they support. It was honestly interesting to see how much the Hallyu Wave had swept Singapore over the years.
First to start off the Night was F.T Island with Bing Bing Bing (빙빙빙), hit songs like I Hope (바래), Love Love Love (사랑사랑사랑) and Flower Rock. The crowd definitely went crazy when the group’s lead singer, Hongki, walked down the extended stage and both him and drummer Minhwan took off their blazers showing off their trained biceps.
It was also immensely cute when Minhwan tried flaunting his drumming skills. It’s no wonder why F.T Island was chosen as the opening act – they did a great job in bringing up the atmosphere of the whole concert hall!
The next up in line was The Boss (D-NA), who was introduced by the MCs as the next Dong Bang Shin Ki. Just as expected, their rendition of Shining World (눈부신 세계) was simply breathtaking as their wonderful vocals shone in this ballad. The moment the song ended, the boys immediately regained their momentum and presented their two title songs Stumble Stumble (비틀비틀) and Admiring Boy (동경소년).
It’s not ZE:A’s first time in Singapore yet it was obvious that these 9 boys were excited to be back again. Kwanghee greeted the crowd enthusiastically and the rest were in smiles throughout their performance. The boys also mentioned that they are in midst of preparing for their comeback, so Ninjas, get ready to glue yourselves in front of the television or computers soon! The boys presented Mazeltov, All Day Long (하루종일) and Level Up (이별드립) and awed the crowd with their dance routines and great stage presence.
Infinite kicked start their performance with their debut track Come Back Again (다시 돌아와), showing off the signature ‘guitar’ dance, followed by Wings (날개) and recent hit She’s Back. Although they have only debuted this year, they lack no experience in entertaining the thousands of audience. Undeniably, it seemed like many K-pop lovers were taken by surprise by their performance and had a better impression of this rookie group, as many discussed on online social sites after the concert.
Despite the fact that SHINee was one member down as lead singer Jonghyun had an ankle injury, their performances were not discounted. Singapore Shawols showed their support to the remaining members by singing along to Jonghyun’s parts and fan chanted during their performances – Noona Nomu Yeppeo (누난 너무 예뻐) Remix, chart-toppers Ring Ding Dong, Lucifer and Hello. There were slight glitches throughout the performance, but it did not bring down the mood of the audience – in fact, the shouts and screams were brought to an all-time high. Impressively, the other members managed Jonghyun’s parts pretty well, especially Taemin who pulled off Jonghyun’s high note well in Lucifer. It was really spectacular and amazing as the whole concert hall danced along to their tracks.
During the short interview, leader Onew mentioned that he would love to eat Singapore’s famous Black Pepper Crab again, but due to the short stay in Singapore, it was impossible. Member Key also gave a short explanation to Jonghyun’s absence, despite him really wanting to. It seemed like the boys missed Singapore as much as local fans missed them.
Girls’ Generation’s performance was most probably the main highlight of the night. The crowd, both guys and girls, was totally uncontrollable the moment they appeared. Even the fan chants the SONEs shouted were startlingly loud!
They performed four of their title tracks, Tell Me Your Wish (Genie) (소원을말해봐), Oh!, Run Devil Run and Gee and you could practically hear the whole hall singing along with them, like a mass karaoke session. During their short interview, Jessica, Tiffany, Seohyun and Sooyoung addressed the crowd in decent English and that was all that was needed to drive the crowd into frenzy. Being the only female group performing that night, it was no wonder how they stole the limelight.
The final group was veteran group Big Bang, and to many’s delight they sang a total of seven songs – Gara Gara Go!! (ガラガラGO!!), Number 1, Haru Haru (하루 하루), Lies, Last Farewell, How Gee and Hands Up. Being one of Korea’s most popular boyband, it’s no doubt how easy it was for them to move the crowd to their beat.
Their performances were highly energetic as they ran around the runway, interacting with the audience. Their lively onstage personality made a lasting impact on much of the audience that night.
Wrapping up the great Night of performances, all seven groups reappeared on stage for the encore and sang together to Michael Jackson’s We are the World. It was really an epic moment as SHINee, Big Bang, Girls’ Generation, ZE:A, Infinite, F.T. Island and The Boss stood together in a row and sang together with the crowd. This was probably many Kpop fans’ dream – could this be Singapore’s answer to Korea’s Dream Concert?
Despite it being a 2.5 hour concert, there was not a moment whereby the crowd was not captivated. If the Hallyu Wave was to stay, it could potentially become one of the trademark concerts of the year every Kpop lover could look forward to yearly.
7 K-pop groups, 1 stage. A night to remember.
